The story

The Ancient City, Muang Boran, is an open-air museum on Sukhumvit Road in Samut Prakan, about 40 minutes' drive from Suvarnabhumi Airport and within an hour of central Bangkok by its own site. It covers 316 acres laid out like the map of Thailand, in Northern, Northeastern, Central and Southern sections plus a Suvarnabhumi section, and it is filled with reconstructions of Thai buildings made from historical evidence: the Royal Sanphachen Throne Hall of the Ayutthaya period, rebuilt from very limited evidence, a Haw Phra Kaew built from the image carved on a late-Ayutthaya scripture cabinet, and the Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall of the Rattanakosin period, among many others. It was built by the collector Lek Viriyaphant (1914 to 2000), who feared Thai culture was fading from modern life; its Sanphachen hall was chosen by King Rama IX as the place to welcome Queen Elizabeth II in 1972 (muangboranmuseum.com, checked 24 Sep 2026). The operator sells three tickets.

What it feels like: a country's worth of temples and palaces in one long afternoon, with sky and open ground between them. You cross from the north of the country to the south in a few minutes, and the scale of the place means you choose a route rather than wander. The throne halls are the place to slow down: full-size buildings standing in open ground instead of hemmed in by a city, so you can step back and see them whole. By mid-afternoon the heat is in the stone paths, and a buffet meal at the right hour turns a hot day into a comfortable one.

Who this suits, and why: the multigenerational group and active seniors, who get the architecture of the whole of Thailand without a domestic flight, provided they do not try to walk all of it; the school-holiday family who want one big open-air day between Bangkok's malls and markets; couples and photographers who like buildings and a quieter day than central Bangkok. It is a lot of ground in the heat for toddlers, and the ticket-only options leave the journey to you.
