The story

The Erawan Museum is a private museum of art and religion in Samut Prakan, built by Lek Viriyaphant, who also founded the Ancient City, and set under a giant metal statue of Erawan, the elephant of Indra; the museum's own page gives the Sanskrit name as Airavata (erawanmuseum.com, checked 24 Sep 2026). Its three levels follow the Traiphum, the Buddhist picture of the worlds. Underground is the Suvarnabhumi floor, with the founder's collection of old ceramics, among them Sangkhalok and Benjarong ware, around a central naga. Above it is the Human World floor, a round hall of light-pink brick under a large stained-glass ceiling of the world map by a German artist, with Phetchaburi stucco work and four pillars carrying Jataka tales for four faiths: Buddhist, Hindu, Mahayana and Christian. At the top, inside the elephant's body, is the Universe floor: a painted sky of the sun, the planets and the Milky Way above a Sukhothai-style Buddha image, reached by a lift in the elephant's left hind leg or a spiral staircase in its right one. Outside, a garden of mythical creatures in stucco and ceramic surrounds the building, with a pilgrimage route of shrines in the Buddhist and Brahmin-Hindu traditions. Every ticket includes flowers, incense and a lotus offering to make inside, and the museum lends audio guides in English and four other languages.

What it feels like: you arrive to the elephant first, huge against the sky, and then go down before you go up. The underground floor is quiet and dim, cases of glazed pottery around the coiled naga. The middle hall is the surprise: colour everywhere, the stained-glass ceiling throwing light across the stucco and the benjarong. Then the lift or the spiral stair takes you inside the elephant itself, into a small, hushed shrine under a painted universe, where the offering from your ticket is made. For an Indian family the mythology is familiar ground: Indra's elephant, a Hindu shrine on the pilgrimage path, and the offering in your hand from the ticket counter.

Who this suits, and why: the multigenerational group, because the lift means grandparents reach the shrine without the stairs and the story needs no explaining; the pilgrimage-minded family and active seniors who want a place of worship as much as a museum; the school-holiday family, for the elephant that the children will photograph from every side. It is a compact visit, one building and its garden rather than a whole day, which is why it pairs well with the Ancient City.
