The story

Both places were founded by the same man, Lek Viriyaphant, a collector born in 1914 who worried that Thai culture was fading from everyday life (the museums' own sites). The Ancient City, or Muang Boran, on Sukhumvit Road in Samut Prakan, is an open-air museum of 316 acres laid out like the map of Thailand, with Northern, Northeastern, Central and Southern zones and a Suvarnabhumi section. Across it stand reconstructions of historic buildings made from historical evidence, among them an Ayutthaya-period throne hall and the Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall of the Rattanakosin period; the site received Queen Elizabeth II on her 1972 visit. The Erawan Museum is a private museum under a giant three-headed elephant. Inside are three floors: an underground level of old ceramics, including Sangkhalok and Benjarong ware from the founder's collection; a middle floor under a stained-glass ceiling showing a map of the world, with pillars carved with Jataka tales for four religions; and, inside the elephant itself, a chamber with a painted solar system on the ceiling, a replica Buddha footprint and a Sukhothai-style Buddha image.

What it feels like: the Ancient City is a whole country compressed into an afternoon. You cross from the northern zone to the southern past rebuilt throne halls and temples, open ground and trees between them, and it is big enough that you plan it rather than wander it. The Erawan Museum is the opposite: one building, climbed floor by floor, from cases of old Sangkhalok and Benjarong ware up to a hall of coloured light under the stained glass, and finally into the belly of the elephant, where the ceiling becomes a painted solar system. The museum says every admission ticket includes flowers, incense and a lotus offering to make inside, and its audio guide is available in English.

Who this suits, and why: the multigenerational family above all, because the Ancient City gives grandparents the temples and palaces of the whole country without a single domestic flight, and the Erawan Museum's elephant is the photograph the children will want; active seniors with a car to get around the Ancient City; couples and photographers who like architecture and a quieter day than central Bangkok. It is a lot of ground for toddlers in the heat, and the ticket carries no transfer, so it works best with a car your captain adds.

What your ticket covers

Opening hours and entry times are confirmed for your date.

  1. The ticket carries no transfer. The Erawan Museum's own site points visitors to BTS Chang Erawan station (E17), exit 2. For the Ancient City on Sukhumvit Road, or to do both venues in one day, ask your captain to add a car.

  2. Open daily 9 am to 6 pm, ticket sales close at 5 pm (erawanmuseum.com). The underground ceramics floor, the middle hall under the stained-glass ceiling, and the chamber inside the elephant, then the garden of mythical-creature sculptures around it.

  3. Open daily 9 am to 7 pm, ticket office closes at 6 pm (muangboranmuseum.com). The Northern, Northeastern, Central and Southern zones and the Suvarnabhumi section; choose the zones that matter to you, because 316 acres is too much ground for one visit on foot.
