The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   Fly In

   Fly to Guwahati and travel overnight into Arunachal Pradesh, with the Inner Line Permit arranged in advance because you will not get in without one. Ziro sits at about 1,500 metres, a flat plateau of rice fields ringed by pine ridges, and the air changes as you climb.

2. Stage 02

   Villages

   The Apatani villages of Hong and Hija, walked with local hosts rather than toured. The Apatani are known for a wet-rice system that farms fish in the same flooded paddies, which is genuinely ingenious, and for a living culture of festivals, handloom weaving, bamboo-and-cane craft and traditional village councils.

3. Stage 03

   Plateau Day

   A cycle loop across the plateau, which is flat, quiet and among rice fields that shift from bright green to gold depending on the month. A sunset from one of the pine ridges above the valley, which takes twenty minutes to reach and is where everyone ends up.

4. Stage 04

   Talley Valley

   Talley Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, a day out into cloud forest, bamboo and orchids at around 2,400 metres. The trails are muddy and the biodiversity is the point: this is one of the least studied forests in the country and it feels like it.

5. Stage 05

   The Return

   Down to the plains and the flight home. Four nights in a valley most Indians could not place, where the September music festival brings a crowd and the other eleven months belong to the rice.
