The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   Hanoi

   Land in Hanoi and go straight into the old quarter, thirty-six narrow streets each named for the trade that was once done on it. Traffic here is a river of scooters you cross by walking slowly and never stopping. Street food for dinner, sitting on a plastic stool eighteen inches off the pavement.

2. Stage 02

   Ha Long

   Transfer to Ha Long, around two and a half hours on the expressway, and board the overnight cruise. Roughly 1,600 limestone karsts stand out of the water, and you spend the afternoon kayaking among them and going into one of the caves. Sunset from the top deck, dinner on board, anchored out.

3. Stage 03

   Bay Sunrise → Hanoi

   Tai chi on deck at sunrise, which nobody expects to enjoy and most people do, then a tender out to see how the floating communities here live and work. Brunch as the boat runs back to the pier, and the drive to Hanoi, arriving with the evening in hand.

4. Stage 04

   Fly Centre

   Fly to Da Nang in the centre of the country, about an hour and a quarter, and the weather usually changes with it. My Khe beach runs for kilometres and was where American servicemen came on leave; today it is a long strip of sand and seafood restaurants. An easy evening.

5. Stage 05

   Golden Bridge

   Up to Ba Na Hills by cable car for the Golden Bridge, a walkway held up by two enormous stone hands, which is unapologetically built for photographs and works anyway. Down in the afternoon and on to Hoi An, arriving as the lanterns come on along the river.

6. Stage 06

   Hoi An

   Hoi An properly. Basket boats in the coconut palms at Cam Thanh, which is a comedy as much as an excursion; the tailors, who will fit you in the morning and deliver the next day; and the old town itself, a trading port preserved intact because the river silted up and the money left.

7. Stage 07

   Fly South

   Fly south to Ho Chi Minh City, still Saigon to most people who live there, and a completely different tempo again: wider, louder, faster and more commercial. Ben Thanh market in the afternoon and a rooftop bar in the evening, looking down at a city that never quite stops.

8. Stage 08

   History Day

   The history day, and it is a heavy one. The Cu Chi tunnels north of the city, 250 kilometres of hand-dug network that you can go down into, and then the War Remnants Museum in town, which is unflinching and told from the Vietnamese side. Worth doing and worth doing in this order.

9. Stage 09

   The Delta

   Down into the Mekong Delta. A floating market where the boats sell wholesale from dawn and each hangs its produce from a pole so you can see it from a distance, then narrow creeks by sampan under the palms, and a lunch of river fish that is the best meal of the trip more often than not.

10. Stage 10

    The Return

    Fly home. Ten days, three Vietnams that barely resemble each other, roughly 1,700 kilometres of country, and a permanent internal ranking of pho against which everything else will now be measured.
