The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   Arrive

   Picked up at Trivandrum, an hour south, and into a room on the north cliff. Varkala is unusual on this coast: a red laterite cliff running above the beach with the path, the cafes and the stays along the top. The first sunset is from the cliff edge, which is where every evening ends.

2. Stage 02

   Sea Day

   Yoga at sunrise, which almost every place along the cliff runs and which suits the setting. Then the beach, which is reached by steps down from the cliff, and a seafood lunch chosen from what came in that morning. The day repeats itself deliberately.

3. Stage 03

   Surf Morning

   A surf lesson at the south break, which is gentle, sandy-bottomed and designed for beginners, in the morning when the wind is down. An Ayurvedic massage in the afternoon, since this coast is where the tradition is strongest and the prices are a fraction of a resort spa.

4. Stage 04

   Backwaters Lite

   Inland to Golden Island by canoe through a quieter arm of the backwaters, which is the small version of the Alleppey experience without the houseboat traffic. The Janardanaswamy temple on the way back, which is around two thousand years old and still very much in use.

5. Stage 05

   The Return

   A last yoga session and the transfer to the airport. Four nights on a cliff, a functioning sleep pattern, and the specific unclenching that happens when the same three things happen in the same order every day.
