The route we start from
These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.
- Stage 01
Izmir
Land in Izmir, which is Turkey's third city and its most relaxed, built around a bay with a waterfront promenade called the Kordon that the whole city walks along in the evening. Fish and raki at a table by the water, and an early night before the ruins start.
- Stage 02
Ephesus
Ephesus, one of the largest and most impressive cities of the ancient world and once the second most important city of the Roman Empire. The marble street, the Library of Celsus facade, and a theatre that seated 25,000. The Temple of Artemis nearby was a wonder of the ancient world and only one column of it stands today. Sirince in the afternoon for wine.
- Stage 03
To Pamukkale
Inland to Pamukkale, arriving for the late light. The name means cotton castle, and the hillside is a cascade of white travertine terraces formed by calcium carbonate coming out of the hot springs over thousands of years. You walk up barefoot, through the warm water, as the sun goes down.
- Stage 04
Hierapolis
Hierapolis on the plateau above the terraces, a Roman spa town with a necropolis, a theatre and a main street still traceable. Then Cleopatra's antique pool, which is a thermal pool with fallen marble columns lying on the bottom that you swim over. The afternoon is a proper hammam.
- Stage 05
Coast
West to the coast at Kusadasi for a beach day, which this itinerary has earned by now. The Aegean here is warm into October, the seafront is long, and lunch is grilled fish at a table more or less on the sand. Nothing more strenuous is planned or wanted.
- Stage 06
Free Day
Free. The usual choice is a boat trip out to the islands and coves along this stretch of coast, or the bazaar and the old quarter if you would rather shop than sail. Both end with an early dinner, because tomorrow is a flight.
- Stage 07
The Return
Fly home from Izmir. Seven days on the side of Turkey most Indian travellers never see, having walked a classical city, swum over Roman columns and stood barefoot on a white mountain of limestone.
