The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

  1. Stage 01

    Fly In

Fly into Guwahati and start the drive north into Arunachal Pradesh, which needs an Inner Line Permit arranged in advance. The first night is Bomdila at around 2,400 metres, and the day is long, so the point is simply to gain height gently and sleep high enough to matter.

  2. Stage 02

    To Dirang

On to Dirang through ridge roads and cloud. The dzong is a fortified village of stone houses on a spur, still lived in, and the hot springs below the town are used by everyone. A short day by the standards of this trip, which is welcome.

  3. Stage 03

    Over Sela

Over Sela Pass at 4,170 metres, where there is a lake at the top that freezes in winter and prayer flags in every direction. Jaswant Garh below it, a memorial to a soldier who held a position alone in 1962 and is still formally on the roll. Into Tawang in the afternoon.

  4. Stage 04

    Monastery

Tawang Monastery in the morning, the largest in India and the second largest anywhere, founded in the seventeenth century and home to several hundred monks. Morning prayers, the museum, and the eight-metre Buddha in the assembly hall. The old town in the afternoon.

  5. Stage 05

    High Lakes

Up to the high lakes, which locals call Madhuri lake after a film shot there and is properly Sangetsar, formed by the 1950 earthquake with dead trees still standing in the water. The road runs close to the border and is weather-dependent. Bunker chai on the way back.

  6. Stage 06

    Return Leg

Back over Sela to Dirang, which is the same road in the other direction and genuinely different in the changed light. This is the day people stop photographing everything and just look out of the window.

  7. Stage 07

    The Return

Down to Guwahati and the flight home. Six nights, one pass at 4,170 metres, one of the great monasteries of the Himalayan world, and a part of India that fewer people visit in a year than see the Taj in a morning.
