The story

Mu Ko Surin is a national park of five islands in the Andaman Sea near Thailand's sea border with Myanmar, declared in 1981: Ko Surin Nuea, Ko Surin Tai, Ko Ri, Ko Khai and Ko Klang. The Tourism Authority of Thailand describes stretches of coral reef in shallow water, above all around Surin Nuea and Surin Tai, where at low tide you can walk the 200 metres or so between the two islands across the Ao Chong Khad channel; quiet bays at Ao Mae Yai, Ao Mai Ngam and Ao Suthep; sea turtles and, now and then, a whale shark. A Moken community of about 200 people, sea nomads who keep their traditional way of life, lives at Ao Bon on Ko Surin Tai. Speedboats take about 1.5 hours from Khura Buri pier in Phang Nga, and the park's visitor season runs from 1 November to 30 April (tourismthailand.org, checked 24 Sep 2026). The operator's day trip from Phuket includes snorkelling and lunch and runs about 11 hours. The sheet does not name the pier, the snorkelling stops or whether the national park fee is in the price; your captain sends the operator's programme for your date with the quote.

What it feels like: this is the far end of the Andaman coast, and the day feels like it. A long, early drive up to the pier, then a long speedboat ride out to five green islands with coral in shallow water. Much of the reef lies in shallow water, so a nervous swimmer in a life jacket can float face down and watch the fish. If the programme includes Ao Bon, it is a village where people live, not a show; your captain explains what is appropriate.

Who this suits, and why: couples and honeymooners, and friends groups, who want the quieter, further-away islands rather than the busiest ones; families with teenagers who enjoy snorkelling; photographers. At about 11 hours with a long drive and an open-sea crossing, it is not a day for toddlers or anyone who struggles with long journeys or seasickness.

What happens

The plan as the operator runs it. Start times and pickup are confirmed for your date.

  1. Collection from your Phuket hotel, shared or private as booked, and the long drive to the pier; the pickup time and the pier come with your voucher.

  2. Out by speedboat; TAT gives about 1.5 hours from Khura Buri pier. The stops and their order are set by the operator and the park on the day, by tide and weather.

  3. Snorkelling over the shallow reefs and lunch; your captain sends the operator's programme with the stops for your date, including whether it visits Ao Bon.

  4. The speedboat back to the mainland and the drive to your Phuket hotel; the whole day runs about 11 hours by the operator.
