The route we start from
These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.
- Stage 01
Colombo
Land in Colombo, which most itineraries skip and should not. The Pettah markets, the Galle Face green at dusk where the whole city comes to eat, and a street-food dinner of kottu roti, which is chopped on a hotplate with a noise you hear before you see it.
- Stage 02
To Galle
South to Galle, about two hours down the coast. The fort, founded by the Portuguese and built up under Dutch rule, is walled and still lived in: churches, a lighthouse, shuttered shophouses now full of cafes and jewellers. Walk the ramparts at sunset, which is when the town comes out to do exactly the same thing.
- Stage 03
Beach Day
Unawatuna for the day, twenty minutes on. It is a sheltered bay with a reef, so the swimming is calm and the snorkelling is decent straight off the beach. Nothing is scheduled. A seafood lunch and a long afternoon of not very much.
- Stage 04
The Return
Back up to Colombo and the flight home. Three nights, no visa queue worth mentioning, and considerably more country covered than a long weekend usually allows.
