The route we start from
These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.
- Stage 01
Arrival
Land at Colombo and climb into the hill country, which takes most of the day and gains around 1,800 metres. The temperature drops as you go and by the time you arrive you will want the layer you packed sceptically. An early dinner and a fire, because Nuwara Eliya gets genuinely cold at night.
- Stage 02
Nuwara Eliya
Nuwara Eliya, which the British built as a hill station and never quite stopped looking like one: mock-Tudor, a racecourse, a post office with a clock tower. A working tea factory in the morning to see withering, rolling and grading, with a tasting at the end that will spoil supermarket tea for you.
- Stage 03
Horton Plains
Horton Plains before dawn, because World's End is a sheer drop of around 880 metres and it clouds over by about nine, after which you are looking at fog. The circuit is roughly nine kilometres on a plateau of grassland and cloud forest, past Baker's Falls, and it is cold at the start.
- Stage 04
To Ella
Down to Ella through the estates, ideally on the train for at least part of it, which is one of the great rail rides anywhere. A plantation walk in the afternoon, and the Nine Arch Bridge, a stone viaduct built without steel during the First World War and now buried in jungle.
- Stage 05
Ella
Little Adam's Peak at sunrise, a gentle forty-minute climb to a ridge with the whole valley below it and, unlike its bigger namesake, no thousands of steps. The rest of the day is Ella: cafes, Ravana Falls, and the pace of a town that exists for people who walk.
- Stage 06
The Return
Back down to Colombo and the flight home. Five nights, a great deal of tea, and the useful discovery that the most interesting part of Sri Lanka is nowhere near the sea.
