Spiti: Key Monastery at First Light
High-desert roads of Spiti
Highlights
- Morning prayers in the assembly hall at Key gompa
- A thousand-year-old monastery at 4,166m
- Butter tea with the monks afterwards
- The Spiti river valley from the monastery roof
- Kibber village, one of the highest inhabited places with a motorable road
The story
Key gompa looks less built than accumulated — a thousand years of rooms added onto rooms until the whole hill went white, above a river valley with no trees in it at all.
You go up for the morning prayer. Monks file in, the low horns start, and it goes on for an hour while the light comes over the ridge. Afterwards they give you butter tea, which you should try once and will probably not finish.
