The story
The Similan Islands are a national park in the Andaman Sea off Phang Nga province, declared in 1982. The Tourism Authority of Thailand describes nine islands, from Ko Bon in the north to Ko Hu Yong in the south, of 65-million-year-old granite boulders with powdery white sand and clear turquoise water over coral reef, and names shallow snorkelling spots at Ao Hin, Ao Ruea Bai, Ao Kwang En, Hin Dok Mai and behind Ko Miang. The sail-shaped rock called Hin Ruea Bai is the archipelago's symbol. Speedboats take about 1.5 hours from Thap Lamu pier; the park is open to visitors from 1 November to 30 April, limits visitors to 3,850 a day, and Ko Tachai has been closed since 2018 (tourismthailand.org, checked 24 Sep 2026). The operator's day trip from Phuket includes snorkelling and lunch and runs about 11 hours. The sheet does not name the pier, the islands visited or whether the national park fee is in the price; your captain sends the operator's programme for your date with the quote.
What it feels like: a very early start, the drive to the pier in the half-light, then a fast, loud speedboat ride out into open sea. The islands arrive as rounded granite boulders and white sand, and the water is the colour everyone remembers afterwards. Face down in it with a mask, the reef is right there under you. It is a long, bright, salty day, and on a calm sea the ride home is the quietest part of it.
Who this suits, and why: honeymooners and couples who want one day of properly clear water; friends groups and families with teenagers who can swim and enjoy snorkelling; photographers. It is a long day with a long open-sea crossing, so it is not the right choice for toddlers, for anyone who suffers badly from seasickness, or for someone who is not comfortable in the water.
