The story

For when leave is short but the soul is shorter. Shillong's café-and-music scene bookends two big days out: Dawki's absurdly transparent Umngot river, Mawlynnong's swept-clean lanes and living-root bridge starter, then Cherrapunji's giant falls.

Fly to Guwahati and drive up to Shillong, about three hours and 1,500 metres, out of the Assam heat into pine and cloud. Police Bazar in the evening, which is where the whole town eats, and a music venue afterwards, because Shillong takes its live music seriously.
South to Dawki on the Bangladesh border. The Umngot river runs so clear in the dry months that boats appear to hover above the bed, which is a real photograph and not an edit; in monsoon it runs green and the effect is gone. Mawlynnong afterwards, and the border viewpoint.
Cherrapunji, or Sohra, which is among the wettest places on earth. Nohkalikai is the tallest plunge waterfall in India at 340 metres, the Seven Sisters falls run side by side off the plateau edge, and Mawsmai cave is a short lit corridor through limestone.
A cafe brunch in Shillong and the drive back to Guwahati for the flight. Three nights, which is enough for the headline sights and not enough for the root bridges, which is the reason most people come back for the longer trip.
