The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

  1. Stage 01

    Hanoi

Land in Hanoi with the day to spare, which you spend in the old quarter on foot: egg coffee, the lake, and the thirty-six trade streets. In the evening you board the sleeper train to Lao Cai, in a four-berth soft cabin, and wake up in the mountains, which is a better arrival than any flight.

  2. Stage 02

    Into the Valley

Into Sapa in the morning and straight out of it, because the town is the least interesting part. The trek from Lao Chai to Ta Van runs down through rice terraces cut into the valley sides, past Hmong and Dzay villages, ending at a homestay where dinner is cooked with the family and rice wine appears.

  3. Stage 03

    Deeper Trek

A second trekking day on the quieter route, down to the waterfall at Giang Ta Chai through bamboo and across a suspension bridge. It is muddier and steeper than day one and the views are better for it. Back up to Sapa town in the afternoon, tired in the correct way.

  4. Stage 04

    The Roof

Fansipan by cable car, which climbs to 3,143 metres and is the highest point in Indochina. On a clear day the whole range is laid out; in cloud, which is common, you get a temple complex emerging out of white and that is arguably better. A cafe afternoon overlooking the terraces.

  5. Stage 05

    Back to Hanoi

The train back down to Hanoi, arriving with the day free. Egg coffee again because you will want it, the water puppets if you missed them, and a last wander through the old quarter without any particular destination.

  6. Stage 06

    The Return

Fly home. Five nights, two of them on a train, one with a family in a valley, and roughly twenty-five kilometres on foot through country that is still farmed by hand.
