The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   Fly In

   Fly in via Sydney or Melbourne to Ayers Rock airport, which is a single strip in the desert about twenty minutes from the resort. There is just time to reach the sunset viewing area, where the rock turns through ochre, orange and finally a deep red in the last twenty minutes of light.

2. Stage 02

   The Base Walk

   The base walk: 10.6 kilometres on flat ground the whole way around Uluru, which is the only way to understand that it is not one shape but many, with caves, waterholes and rock art at the bottom of it. Anangu stories are attached to specific places along the route. Start at dawn, before the heat.

3. Stage 03

   Kata Tjuta

   West to Kata Tjuta, the thirty-six domes that most people have not heard of and several prefer to Uluru itself. The Valley of the Winds walk goes between and behind them, about seven kilometres to the second lookout. A camel at sunset in the afternoon, which is optional and very silly and good.

4. Stage 04

   Field of Light

   A slow day, because the last one has an evening in it. The Field of Light is a permanent installation of more than 50,000 stems of frosted glass on the desert floor that come on at dusk and change colour through the night, with the rock behind and the Milky Way overhead.

5. Stage 05

   The Return

   A last sunrise on the rock, which is a different colour again from the sunset, then the flight home. Five days in country that is 465 kilometres by road from Alice Springs, the nearest town of any size, and somewhat quieter inside than when you arrived.
