These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.
- Stage 01
Udaipur
Land in Udaipur and take the evening slowly: the ghats along Lake Pichola, the old town lanes, and a rooftop dinner with the City Palace lit across the water. The lake is the whole point of the city and it is best met at sunset on the first night.
- Stage 02
Udaipur
The City Palace in the morning, the largest in Rajasthan, with the crystal gallery and the mirrored rooms, then the boat out to Jag Mandir island. Saheliyon ki Bari in the afternoon, a garden built for a princess and her attendants, with fountains that run on gravity alone.
- Stage 03
To Mount Abu
South-west to Mount Abu, Rajasthan's only hill station, climbing to about 1,200 metres through the Aravallis on a road of switchbacks. It is noticeably cooler, which is why Rajputana society came here in summer. Nakki Lake in the evening, with pedal boats and the whole town walking round it.
- Stage 04
Mount Abu
The Dilwara temples in the morning, which are the reason to come: five Jain temples from the eleventh to thirteenth centuries, plain outside and carved inside into marble so fine it is translucent in places. Photography is not allowed, which is right. Sunset Point in the evening with everybody else.
- Stage 05
Free Day
A free day. The wildlife sanctuary covers most of the plateau and has sloth bear and leopard if you are lucky and patient, Guru Shikhar is the highest point in the Aravallis, and a spa afternoon is the honest third option.
- Stage 06
The Return
Down through the Aravallis to Udaipur and the flight home. Five nights, one lake city and one hill station, and the coolest air available in Rajasthan without leaving the state.
