The route we start from
These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.
- Stage 01
Jaipur
Land in Jaipur, the pink city, painted that colour in 1876 to welcome the Prince of Wales, and the old city has kept the colour since. The evening is Chokhi Dhani, a recreated village on the edge of town with folk dance, camel rides and a thali eaten on the floor, which is touristic and thoroughly enjoyable.
- Stage 02
Jaipur Forts
Amber Fort in the morning, eleven kilometres out and best early, with the mirrored Sheesh Mahal inside and the Maota lake below. Then the City Palace and Jantar Mantar, an eighteenth-century observatory of giant stone instruments built to track the sun and stars. Bazaars in the evening.
- Stage 03
To Jodhpur
West to Jodhpur, around five hours across increasingly dry country. The blue city earns its name on arrival: the old town below the fort is painted indigo house by house, and the best view of it is from anywhere high at sunset.
- Stage 04
Jodhpur
Mehrangarh, which stands 120 metres above the city on a sheer rock and is one of the most famous forts in India, with the palm prints of royal widows still by the gate. The stepwell at Toorji ka Jhalra afterwards, restored and now the centre of the old town's cafe life.
- Stage 05
To Udaipur
South to Udaipur, breaking the drive at Ranakpur: a fifteenth-century Jain temple of 1,444 marble pillars, no two carved alike, which is worth the detour on its own. Arrive at the lake in the evening.
- Stage 06
Udaipur
Udaipur properly. The City Palace is a hilltop complex of courtyards and mirrored rooms above Lake Pichola, and the boat from the jetty at sunset takes you out to Jag Mandir island with the whole city gold behind you.
- Stage 07
Free Day
A free day. The usual choices are Sajjangarh, the monsoon palace on the ridge for the last of the light, the miniature painting workshops, or a spa afternoon. Udaipur is small enough that doing nothing here still feels like something.
- Stage 08
The Return
Fly home from Udaipur. Seven nights, three cities, two enormous forts and one lake, and a much clearer sense of why every palace in Rajasthan is on top of something.
