The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   Queenstown

   Land in Queenstown, where the approach between the mountains is the first thing worth photographing. Into a lakefront room, then the Skyline gondola up the hill for dinner above the town, with the lake going dark below and the Remarkables catching the last light opposite.

2. Stage 02

   Wine Trail

   A private day through the Gibbston Valley cellar doors, part of Central Otago's pinot noir country. Three or four estates at your own pace, a long lunch outside among the vines, and no schedule to be anywhere by any particular time.

3. Stage 03

   Milford

   Out to Milford Sound through the Homer Tunnel and into the fiord: cliffs over a kilometre high straight from the water, waterfalls off every face, seals on the rocks near the mouth. Seats are booked in the quieter part of the boat, away from the main deck crowd.

4. Stage 04

   To Wanaka

   Over the Crown Range, through the switchbacks and into Wanaka. It is the calmer lake town, which is the entire reason it is here in the itinerary. The evening is the lakefront and the lone willow tree standing out in the shallow water.

5. Stage 05

   The Heli Day

   Weather permitting, a helicopter departs from Wanaka for the Southern Alps and a snow-shelf picnic, as listed in the itinerary. The flight route and landing depend on operating conditions; solitude at the landing site is not guaranteed.

6. Stage 06

   Wanaka Slow

   Deliberately empty. Wanaka is small enough to walk end to end, there is a spa booked if you want it, the tree is still there, and the correct answer is often a long breakfast followed by a book by the water. This day is doing structural work in the trip.

7. Stage 07

   Tekapo

   Back inland to Tekapo, where the lake is that unreal glacial turquoise and the little stone Church of the Good Shepherd sits alone on the shore. The hot pools in the evening, and then the stars: the whole basin is an international dark sky reserve and there is no light to spoil it.

8. Stage 08

   Back Around

   A scenic return south through the Mackenzie country with stops wherever they present themselves, which on this road is often. Back into Queenstown in time for a farewell dinner somewhere with a view of the water you have now spent nine days circling.

9. Stage 09

   The Return

   Fly home from Queenstown. Nine days in which the maximum daily obligation was one thing, and the glacier picnic is the photograph that ends up framed.
