The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   Arrival

   Land at Male and cross to the resort by seaplane, over atolls that look drawn rather than real. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, so we book the international legs around it. Then the villa: a deck over the lagoon, steps down into the water, and the first sunset from it.

2. Stage 02

   Reef Day

   The house reef in the morning, straight off your own steps, which is the advantage of an overwater villa over anything on land. The floating breakfast arrives on a tray in the pool at whatever hour you ask for it, and it is there to be photographed and is still a good breakfast. The spa in the evening.

3. Stage 03

   Sandbank

   A dolphin cruise as the light drops, then the centrepiece: a private dinner laid out on a sandbank, a strip of sand with nothing else on it, no other tables and no other people, with lanterns and a boat that comes back for you when you are ready and not before.

4. Stage 04

   Slow Day

   Nothing at all is arranged, deliberately. This is the day the trip is designed around and the one people describe afterwards. A hammock over the water, a book neither of you finishes, and the slow understanding that doing nothing is a skill you have not practised in years.

5. Stage 05

   The Return

   The seaplane back to Male and the flight home. Four nights in a villa standing in a lagoon, one dinner on a sandbank, and a standard for every future anniversary that you have now set considerably too high.
