The route we start from
These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.
- Stage 01
Arrival
Speedboat from Male to Maafushi, around 30–35 minutes. This is an inhabited island rather than a resort, so there are shops, a school and a call to prayer, and the guesthouse costs a fraction of a water villa. The evening is the bikini beach, the designated stretch where swimwear is fine.
- Stage 02
Sandbank Day
A full day out by boat. A sandbank for a barbecue lunch, then a snorkel stop at a reef where nurse sharks gather, which is harmless and startling the first time. Stingrays in the shallows off the beach in the evening, which come in on their own without anyone feeding them.
- Stage 03
Reefs
A reef day: nurse-shark point again if the first go was too short, a turtle reef where greens and hawksbills feed on the grass beds, and sunset fishing with hand lines off the back of the boat. Whatever gets caught is grilled that night, which is either dinner or a story.
- Stage 04
Free Day
Free. Water sports are cheap here, the island is small enough to walk around in an hour, and a resort day pass is available if you want a pool and a cocktail for an afternoon. Most people do one of the three and spend the rest in a hammock.
- Stage 05
The Return
The speedboat back to Male and the flight home. Four nights in the Maldives at a price that does not require a conversation with a bank, and a reef that is the same reef the resorts are on.
