The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   Fly In

   Fly into Leh in winter, when the valley is white and the temperature sits around minus fifteen. The acclimatisation day is doubly non-negotiable now: cold and altitude compound each other. Layer properly, drink more than feels reasonable, and do nothing.

2. Stage 02

   Old Leh

   Old Leh on foot. The nine-storey palace above the town, the lanes below it almost empty, and the bakeries, which in winter are where everyone actually is. Short days and hard light make this the best month for photographs and the worst for standing still.

3. Stage 03

   Monastery Day

   Thiksey and Hemis with essentially nobody else there, which is a completely different experience from the summer season. The monks' routine continues regardless of visitors, and in winter you are a guest at it rather than an audience for it. Butter tea, which is an acquired taste and a genuine help.

4. Stage 04

   Frozen River

   A short section of the Chadar, the frozen Zanskar river, walked with guides on ice that is checked daily. This is a taster rather than the multi-day trek, so it is a few hours on the ice with the canyon walls rising on both sides, and it is enough to understand why the full route has a reputation.

5. Stage 05

   Pangong White

   Pangong frozen, weather permitting, which is the caveat that matters: the road over Chang La closes with no notice and the day is called on the morning. When it runs, the lake is a sheet of ice at 4,350 metres and the drive back happens before dark, because dark here is serious.

6. Stage 06

   The Return

   Fly home. Five nights at temperatures most people never experience, monasteries with no queue, and a lake that spends half the year as the most photographed water in India and the other half as ice.
