The story

KidZania is a city built at child height inside Yas Mall on Yas Island: streets, a bank, a fire station, a hospital, a supermarket, and, by the tourism board's page, over 40 role-playing activities across 55,000 square feet for children aged 4 to 16. Children earn the park's own currency by working and spend it on the things they want to do; parents watch from the pavements. KidZania's own site says adults are admitted only when accompanying at least one child, and adult entry is not on the operator's list, so your captain confirms how the accompanying adult is charged before you pay. Five hours is what the sheet allows and what most children need.

What it feels like: a small, serious city run by nine-year-olds. There are children in firefighter helmets running to a drill, children in white coats at the hospital, children counting their notes at the bank, and parents on the benches slightly stunned at how independent their child has become in an hour. It is indoors and air-conditioned, the noise is cheerful, and there are cafes on the edges. The child comes out tired and rich.

Who this suits, and why: the school-holiday family with children between about five and twelve, above all; this is the day the child chooses and the parents recover from Yas Island. The family with toddlers can bring a two- or three-year-old alongside an older sibling, by KidZania's own age policy, but the activities are built for four and up. It is not a product for couples, friends groups or grandparents on their own; an adult cannot enter without a child.

  3. Children are checked out with the adult they arrived with. Yas Mall's food court is outside the gate.
