The story

The Khai islands are three small islands, Khai Nai, Khai Nui and Khai Nok, in the stretch of sea between Ko Sirae on Phuket and Ko Yao Yai in Phang Nga, about 14 km off the Phuket coast and 15 minutes by speedboat. The Tourism Authority of Thailand describes clear water over coral reef, powdery white sand and rocks worn into curious shapes. Khai Nai has beaches about 500 metres long, restaurants and refreshment shops, deck chairs with parasols, banana-boat and jet-ski rides, shoals of white damselfish, and a population of about 80 cats that has earned it the nickname Ko Kai Maew. Khai Nui, joined to it and ten minutes away by boat, is only about 2 rai, and visitors do not land there: it is for swimming and snorkelling over the reef. Khai Nok looks like a fried egg from the sea, with a short walk of about 80 metres to a viewpoint at its centre, safe swimming and snorkelling, and kayaks and loungers for hire. The islands have no fresh water, electricity or mobile signal and are for day trips only (tourismthailand.org, checked 24 Sep 2026). The operator's half-day tour takes in all three for about 5 hours including the hotel transfer. The sheet does not name the pier, the timings or what is included beyond the boat, so your captain sends the operator's programme with the quote.

What it feels like: a quick, bright morning or afternoon on the water. The speedboat is out and anchored before anyone has settled, and the water under it is clear enough to see the bottom. You slide in with a mask at Khai Nui, stretch out on the sand at Khai Nok or Khai Nai, and someone always ends up photographing the cats. And you are back at the hotel with half the day still yours.

Who this suits, and why: families with young children and first-time snorkellers, because the crossing is short and the water shallow; budget-minded families and friends who want an island day for less than the long trips; couples who want a few hours on the water without giving up a whole day. Seniors who are steady getting on and off boats can usually manage it.

What happens on board

Boarding time and point are confirmed for your date.

  2. About 15 minutes across to the islands. The order of the stops and the time at each are set by the operator on the day, by tide and weather.

  3. Swimming and snorkelling at Khai Nui, where visitors stay in the water rather than land; beach time at Khai Nok and Khai Nai, with food and drinks on sale on the islands.

  4. The speedboat back to Phuket and the transfer to your hotel; about 5 hours in all by the operator.
