The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   To the Water

   Fly into Kochi and drive south to Alleppey, boarding the houseboat by midday. It is a converted rice barge with a bedroom, a deck and a crew of three, one of whom cooks. The afternoon is spent drifting through channels below the level of the paddy fields on either side.

2. Stage 02

   Backwater Morning

   Sunrise on deck, which happens whether you intend it or not because the birds start early. A canoe detour into the narrow village lanes that the houseboat is too wide for, which is where the backwaters actually live. Then dock, and drive up into the hills to Munnar.

3. Stage 03

   Tea Hills

   A dawn walk through the tea estates while the mist is still in the contours, which is the hour the pickers start and the light is best. The tea museum afterwards for the processing, and Top Station for the view into Tamil Nadu when the cloud permits, which is perhaps half the time.

4. Stage 04

   Spice & Story

   A spice garden with someone who grows the plants rather than recites them: cardamom, pepper, nutmeg, vanilla, all growing within a few metres of each other. A Kathakali performance in the evening, where the make-up takes longer than the story, and a last Kerala dinner.

5. Stage 05

   The Return

   Down to Kochi and the flight home. Four nights, one of them floating and two of them in tea, at a pace deliberately set so that the phrase slow mornings is a description rather than marketing.
