The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   Fly In

   Fly into Guwahati and drive east to Kaziranga, around five hours through tea country. Check into an estate stay on the edge of the park. The evening is the veranda and a briefing, because the safaris start at first light and the gates do not wait.

2. Stage 02

   Central Range

   The central range at dawn, which is the classic Kaziranga drive: elephant grass higher than the jeep, mist on the floodplain, and one-horned rhino at close range. The park holds around two-thirds of the world population, so this is not a matter of luck. The afternoon is the estate.

3. Stage 03

   Western Range

   The western range, which is more water and better for birds, plus the highest rhino density in the park. Kaziranga is also a tiger reserve, though the tall grass means almost nobody sees one. The orchid park afterwards, and an Assamese thali at night.

4. Stage 04

   The Return

   A tea tasting on the estate before the drive back to Guwahati and the flight home. Three nights, two ranges, and a floodplain that supports more large mammals per square kilometre than almost anywhere else in Asia.
