The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   Tokyo

   Land in Tokyo and go straight into it. Shinjuku at night is neon on eight storeys of building, the Omoide Yokocho alleys are three feet wide and full of grill smoke, and the whole thing is safe enough to wander jet-lagged at eleven at night. Ramen, then sleep.

2. Stage 02

   Tokyo Deep

   teamLab in the morning, a digital art museum you walk through barefoot in ankle-deep water with projections moving around you. Asakusa in the afternoon for Senso-ji, the city's oldest temple, approached down the Nakamise shopping street. Then Shibuya, and the crossing, best watched from above.

3. Stage 03

   Hakone

   Out to Hakone in the mountains. The circuit runs by switchback train, cable car and ropeway over the sulphur vents at Owakudani, where they boil eggs in the hot springs and the shells turn black, then a boat across Lake Ashi. Fuji is visible on a clear day. The night is a ryokan with an onsen.

4. Stage 04

   To Kyoto

   The Shinkansen to Kyoto, about two and a quarter hours, with Fuji out of the right-hand side if the weather has held. In Kyoto the evening is Gion, the old teahouse district of wooden machiya fronts and lanterns, where geiko and maiko still walk to appointments at dusk.

5. Stage 05

   Kyoto Temples

   Fushimi Inari at first light, which is the only time you get the torii tunnel to yourself: around ten thousand vermilion gates climbing the hillside, and most visitors turn back after fifteen minutes. Kiyomizu-dera afterwards, with its wooden stage out over the hillside and the lanes below it.

6. Stage 06

   Arashiyama

   The bamboo grove at Arashiyama early, then the Iwatayama monkey park up the hill for the view back over Kyoto. In the afternoon, Nara: Todai-ji holds a fifteen-metre bronze Buddha, and the deer in the park have learned to bow for biscuits, which is both charming and slightly predatory.

7. Stage 07

   Osaka Day

   Osaka for the day, which is the city Japan goes to in order to eat. Dotonbori is the canal strip with the running-man sign, takoyaki stands and queues outside places with no English menu and no need for one. The castle in the afternoon if you want something built before 1990.

8. Stage 08

   The Return

   Fly home from Kansai. Eight days, two cities, one mountain, and a rail pass that will have made you permanently impatient with trains in every other country on earth.
