The route we start from
These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.
- Stage 01
Tokyo
Land in Tokyo and go directly to Akihabara, because there is no reason to wait. Electric Town is eight floors of arcade, retro console shops where the cartridges are sorted by console generation, and gachapon machines stacked along whole corridors. The evening is entirely yours in it.
- Stage 02
Fandom Day
The Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, on tickets bought well in advance for a fixed date and entry time, because they sell out and there is no door sale. It is small, deliberately hard to photograph inside, and includes a short film screened nowhere else. Nakano Broadway in the afternoon for the collector floors.
- Stage 03
teamLab & Pop
teamLab Planets in the morning, barefoot, through ankle-deep water with projections responding to you as you move. Then Shibuya for the flagships: the Pokemon Centre, the Jump store, Mandarake and Tower Records, which is seven floors and still very much alive here.
- Stage 04
To Osaka
The Shinkansen to Osaka, about two and a half hours. Dotonbori in the evening, which is the canal strip with the Glico running man, the mechanical crab, and street food eaten standing up. It is the loudest and most cheerful part of Japan and a good contrast to a museum day.
- Stage 05
Nintendo World
Universal Studios Japan, and specifically Super Nintendo World: a physical Mushroom Kingdom with a wearable wristband that turns the whole land into a game you play by hitting blocks and collecting coins. Mario Kart is the headline ride. A full day, and you will use all of it.
- Stage 06
The Return
Fly home from Kansai. Six days, an amount of merchandise that will require a decision about the return baggage allowance, and at least one thing you have been looking for since you were fourteen.
