The story
Phang Nga Bay, in the province next to Phuket, is largely Ao Phang Nga National Park: about 250,000 rai, or 100,000 acres, of islands and sea on and off shore, a national park since 1981, where archaeologists have found prehistoric paintings on the cliffs (Tourism Authority of Thailand, checked 24 Sep 2026). Its landmark is Khao Tapu, a column of limestone about 20 metres high standing alone in the sea, worn so thin at the base by the water that it looks like a nail, which is what 'tapu' means in Thai. It was already a stop for visitors before it appeared in the 1974 James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun, and it has been called James Bond Island ever since. Forty metres away is Khao Phing Kan, a hill split in two by earth movement, the smaller peak leaning on the larger at about 75 degrees, with a strip of sand joining the islands and stairs up the side to a view over the bay.
The operator's version goes out by long-tail boat, the narrow wooden boat driven by an engine on a long shaft at the stern, for about 11 hours with a shared transfer from your hotel, or 12 with a private one. You choose whether to add a spell of sea canoeing, and whether the national park fee is paid in advance or by you on the day. The sheet names James Bond Island, the canoe and the fee; it does not give the pier, the other stops or any meal, so your captain sends the operator's programme for your date.
What it feels like: slower and closer to the water than a speedboat. The long-tail sits low, the engine clatters behind you, spray comes over the side now and then, and the islands come up one at a time, grey and orange cliffs streaked black and hung with green, rising straight out of jade water. Then the famous rock appears, narrower at the bottom than the top. The beach at Khao Phing Kan is busy with boats and cameras; the quieter reward is the bay itself, there and back.
Who this suits, and why: friends groups, couples and budget-minded families who want the film location and a day on the water for the least outlay; honeymooners who like the idea of a traditional boat. A long-tail is open to the sun and rocks in a swell, so families with toddlers, and grandparents who find boarding from a beach difficult, may be happier on a bigger boat.
