The route we start from
These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.
- Stage 01
Rome
Land in Rome and transfer in. The first night is Trastevere, across the river: cobbles, ivy, and restaurants that have not changed their menu in thirty years because there has been no reason to. An early dinner, a walk to the river, and an early night before the city starts properly.
- Stage 02
Ancient Rome
The Colosseum on timed entry with a guide, then straight into the Forum and up Palatine Hill, which is where the emperors actually lived and where the crowds thin out. The afternoon is free for the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, and the Trevi Fountain after dark when it is lit and quieter.
- Stage 03
Vatican
Early entry to the Vatican Museums so that you walk the galleries ahead of the crush, ending in the Sistine Chapel. St Peter's Basilica afterwards, with the dome climb optional. The evening is aperitivo, which in Rome means a drink that arrives with enough food to make dinner a question.
- Stage 04
Florence
The fast train to Florence takes about ninety minutes. The Duomo and Brunelleschi's dome, the Uffizi in the afternoon with the Botticellis, and sunset from Piazzale Michelangelo above the river. Dinner is Florentine, which mostly means steak, and nobody has ever complained about that.
- Stage 05
Tuscany
A day out into the hills. Siena for the shell-shaped Campo where they still run the Palio, San Gimignano for the medieval towers that made it the Manhattan of the 1300s, and a long lunch at a vineyard in between with the wine made about forty metres from the table.
- Stage 06
Venice
Train across to Venice, over the causeway, and then the city has no cars at all. Your first vaporetto down the Grand Canal does most of the work of introducing the place. Drop bags, then Dorsoduro and the Zattere in the evening, where Venetians go when the day visitors have left.
- Stage 07
Venice Slow
St Mark's Square early, before the tour groups land, then the Doge's Palace and the bridge of sighs from the inside. A gondola at dusk, which is expensive and entirely worth it once. The last night is cicchetti: small plates, standing up, moving from one bacaro to the next.
- Stage 08
The Return
Fly home from Venice. Eight days, three cities, one country that fits more beauty into a kilometre than anywhere else, and the newly acquired and permanent habit of talking with your hands.
