The story
Ko Hong, also called Ko Laopilae, is a limestone island in the Mu Ko Hong group of Than Bok Khorani National Park, off the Krabi coast (tourismthailand.org, checked 24 Sep 2026). Its front beach curves like a bird in flight, fine white sand over clear, emerald-green water. At one end of the beach an iron stairway of 419 steps climbs to a viewpoint that looks right round over the islands of Krabi and Phang Nga. On the far side of the island is Ko Hong Lagoon, Thale Nai: a wide room of sea closed in by high cliffs, with green water inside where boats moor and people swim. Boats can only go in and out through one channel, and only when the sea is high enough. The beach has a national park visitor centre, a small shop and restrooms. The operator's day goes out by speedboat, with lunch and snorkelling, for about 7 hours.
What it feels like: the speedboat is fast and loud, spray over the side and the limestone islands coming up one after another. Then the engine cuts and the day slows down. When the tide lets the boat in, the lagoon is the moment most worth the money: tall grey cliffs on every side, green water under the boat and the open sea gone from view. Then the beach: white sand, clear water and the snorkelling. Anyone with the legs for it can take the 419 steps for the view back over the islands.
Who this suits, and why: the school-holiday family and the family with teenagers, who get a beach, a swim and snorkelling in a single day out; honeymooners and couples for whom one island, done properly, beats a hurried tour of many; and friends groups who want the speed of the boat. Toddlers and anyone who dislikes a bumpy ride may prefer the slower long-tail boat day to the same island, sold as its own product.
