The experience outline

1. Step 01

   The Spin

   A coracle across the Tungabhadra, which is a round basket boat of bamboo and tar that the boatman propels by spinning rather than rowing and will spin deliberately if asked. From the water you get the temple towers and the boulder fields from an angle no road offers.

2. Step 02

   The Ride

   Bicycles on the far bank for a guided loop through boulder lanes, banana plantations and ruins that are not on any route, which is the advantage of two wheels here: Hampi's UNESCO-listed monuments spread across roughly 41 square kilometres, and walking it wastes the day while a car cannot use the paths.

3. Step 03

   The Climb

   Matanga Hill for the finish, which is a steep twenty-minute climb on cut stone steps and delivers the whole site at once: the Virupaksha gopuram, the river, and boulder country running to the horizon, all of it turning orange. Morning slots run the same route in reverse for sunrise.
