The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   Athens

   Land in Athens and transfer into Plaka, the old quarter directly under the Acropolis rock. The evening is tavernas in the lanes, with the Parthenon lit from below and visible from most of the rooftops. It is a soft start, deliberately, because tomorrow begins early.

2. Stage 02

   Acropolis

   The Acropolis at opening time, which in Greece is as much about the heat as the crowds; by ten the marble is bright and by noon it is punishing. The Acropolis Museum afterwards, where the surviving sculptures are displayed in the same orientation as the building outside the window.

3. Stage 03

   Ferry South

   South across the Aegean to Santorini. The crossing is part of it, with islands going past for hours. You come up onto the caldera rim and check into a room facing the flooded volcano, with the sea a couple of hundred metres straight down. The afternoon is for adjusting to that.

4. Stage 04

   Caldera Walk

   The rim path from Fira to Oia, around ten kilometres along the cliff edge, past chapels and through Imerovigli, with the caldera on your left the entire way. Start early, take water, and give yourself the afternoon to recover before the evening in Oia.

5. Stage 05

   Catamaran

   A catamaran day along the caldera wall: the hot springs off the volcanic islet, the red beach, the white beach, swimming stops, and lunch grilled on the back of the boat. It ends with the sunset seen from the water, which is the version most people do not get.

6. Stage 06

   Island Free

   Nothing scheduled. The usual choices are the wineries on the island's spine, where the vines are trained in low baskets against the wind and the assyrtiko is unlike anything else, or the black volcanic sand at Perissa with a sunbed and no further ambitions.

7. Stage 07

   The Return

   Fly home from Santorini. Seven days in a country that is fundamentally about light, and the annoying realisation that none of your photographs caught it.
