The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   Arrival

   Land in the rains, which is when Goa costs half what it does in December and looks about four times better. A shack in the evening with the rain coming down on the roof, which most shacks stay open for, and a beach with nobody on it.

2. Stage 02

   Green Goa

   A spice farm inland, which in monsoon is the right thing to do because everything is growing at once and the plantation smells of it. The drives between are the point: the paddy fields are flooded and brilliant green, and the laterite roads run red beside them.

3. Stage 03

   Waterfalls

   Dudhsagar at full flood, which is the only time the name makes sense: a four-tier fall of around 310 metres turning white the whole way down. Access is by forest department jeep and is sometimes closed outright when the water is too high, which is the trade for seeing it like this.

4. Stage 04

   The Return

   A slow morning and the flight home. Three nights in the season locals prefer and visitors avoid, which is exactly why the prices and the beaches are what they are.
