The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

  1. Stage 01

    Tbilisi

Land in Tbilisi and go into the old town. It is brick, wooden balconies, and a fortress on the ridge above, and it smells faintly of sulphur because the bathhouses are in the middle of it. A wine bar for the first night, where the qvevri wines will not taste like anything you have had before.

  2. Stage 02

    City

Up to Narikala fortress by cable car for the whole city laid out below, then down through the old town on foot. The sulphur baths at Abanotubani in the afternoon: private rooms by the hour, hot mineral water, and an optional scrub that is more vigorous than expected. The Peace Bridge after dark.

  3. Stage 03

    To Kazbegi

North on the Georgian Military Highway, which has carried traffic through the Caucasus for two thousand years. Ananuri fortress on its reservoir about an hour out, the Soviet friendship monument at Gudauri with its mosaic and its drop, and then the climb over the Jvari Pass to Stepantsminda.

  4. Stage 04

    Kazbegi

Up to Gergeti Trinity Church, which stands alone on a spur at 2,170 metres with Mount Kazbek at 5,054 metres directly behind it. Four-wheel drive most of the way, then a short walk, or two hours on foot if you would rather earn it. The afternoon is the valley and the village below.

  5. Stage 05

    Wine Country

Back down and east into Kakheti, the wine region, where people have been making wine in buried clay qvevri for around eight thousand years. Two or three family cellars, a long lunch, and the drive through vineyards with the Caucasus standing along the northern horizon.

  6. Stage 06

    The Return

A last Tbilisi morning and the flight home. Six days in a country most people cannot place on a map, which has better food than it has any right to, and is startlingly cheap once you are there.
