The story

Europe's best-value ski week. Gudauri's wide open bowls and reliable snow, lessons and gear for first-timers, freeride terrain for the experienced, and long lunches of khinkali dumplings in mountain huts — all at a fraction of Alpine prices.

Your journey outline

Each stage can cover one or more days. Tell us what you would change; your final itinerary is agreed before booking.

  1. Land in Tbilisi and transfer straight up the Georgian Military Highway, which is about two hours and climbs steadily into the Greater Caucasus. Gudauri sits at around 2,200 metres on a south-facing slope with the road running through it. Check in, collect the lift pass, and look at tomorrow.

  2. Gear fitting first thing, then ski school. The beginner terrain here is wide, gentle and above the tree line, which means no trees to be frightened of and plenty of room to fall over in privacy. Two sessions with a break in the middle, and a mountain hut lunch of khinkali dumplings.

  3. A second full day, linking runs and going higher on the mountain as the lessons continue. Gudauri's lifts top out around 3,300 metres and the runs are long, which after a day of nursery slopes is a noticeable step up. Confident skiers peel off with the guide for the wider terrain.

  4. Off-piste and freeride day for anyone ready for it, which here means enormous open bowls rather than anything technical, with a guide. Anyone still finding their feet gets a third lesson instead. The paragliding launch is on the same slope if you want to leave the mountain a different way.

  5. A day off the skis and out to Kazbegi. The drive is around an hour and a half north through the Jvari Pass to Stepantsminda, and then up to the Gergeti Trinity Church, standing alone at 2,170 metres under Mount Kazbek at 5,054 metres. It is the most photographed view in the country.

  6. Transfer back down to Tbilisi and fly home. Six days of skiing at a fraction of the Alpine cost, with long lunches, wide empty bowls, and the ongoing discovery that Georgian food is better than it has any business being at 2,200 metres.
