The story

Georgia has the oldest evidence of winemaking anywhere, dating back some 8,000 years, and still makes it in clay qvevri buried underground. Tour family cellars in Kakheti, feast at a traditional supra with a toastmaster, and visit hilltop monasteries between the vines.

Your journey outline

Each stage can cover one or more days. Tell us what you would change; your final itinerary is agreed before booking.

  1. Land in Tbilisi and spend the evening in the old town, which is the right introduction: sulphur-smelling brick, wooden balconies and a fortress above. Dinner is a supra, the Georgian feast, run by a toastmaster who will make speeches throughout and expect you to drink to each of them.

  2. East into Kakheti, about two hours. The first cellars are family operations rather than estates, and the wine comes out of qvevri, clay vessels buried to the neck in the floor, a method around eight thousand years old and now UNESCO-listed. Sighnaghi for the sunset, a walled hill town over the Alazani valley.

  3. A full day of qvevri cellars with the families who run them, which in practice means being fed as much as poured for. Amber wine made on the skins, saperavi so dark it stains the glass, and chacha at the end, which is grape spirit and should be treated with respect. A supra to finish.

  4. Bodbe monastery in the morning, where St Nino is buried, with its cypress avenue and the valley beyond. Alaverdi Cathedral after, an eleventh-century church standing alone in vineyards with monks still making wine on site. The night is at a working vineyard rather than a hotel.

  5. Back to Tbilisi through the hills and the flight home. Four nights, a great many cellars, and the discovery that the oldest winemaking tradition on earth is one almost nobody outside the country has tasted.
