The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   Arrival

   Land, and into a high-floor room facing the Burj Khalifa, which is the whole basis of the trip: the building is 828 metres and there is no way of being casual about it from a window. Dinner at the fountains at its base, which run on the half hour against the tower lit up behind them.

2. Stage 02

   Sky & Sea

   The Burj at sunset, on a booked slot on level 124 so that you are up there for the twenty minutes when the desert goes gold and the city comes on underneath. Then the Marina for a private yacht hour at golden light, out past the Palm, which only makes sense as a shape from the water.

3. Stage 03

   The Dune Dinner

   A deliberately empty day, because the evening is the one you will remember. A vehicle collects you in the late afternoon and drives into the dunes, and there is a single table, lanterns in the sand, a cook, and nobody else in any direction. The stars out there are the part nobody mentions in advance.

4. Stage 04

   Old Dubai

   The other Dubai, and the better half of it. Al Fahidi, the old quarter of wind towers and narrow lanes, then an abra across the creek, which is a wooden boat carrying twenty people and costing almost nothing. The gold and spice souks on the far bank, and a couples' spa ritual in the afternoon.

5. Stage 05

   The Return

   A late checkout, one more swim, and the flight home. Five days in a city that is very good at excess and, if you organise it properly, is also very good at one quiet table in a desert.
