The route we start from
These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.
- Stage 01
Arrive & Setup
Arrive in McLeod Ganj, check into the stay and do the only thing that matters on day one: test the wifi properly, on a call, at the desk you will actually use. Then sunset point, which is a ten-minute walk and resets the reason you came to work from a mountain.
- Stage 02
Work Week
The working rhythm starts. Calls and deep work until five, when the light goes behind the Dhauladhar and the town comes out. The Dalai Lama temple complex is fifteen minutes away and the kora, the circuit around it, is the right walk to end a working day on.
- Stage 03
Café Circuit
A day worked from the cafes, which is half the appeal of this town. Illiterati has the view and the book walls, Moonpeak does the coffee, and several others have power sockets and no objection to a laptop occupying a table for three hours.
- Stage 04
Bhagsu Evening
Finish early and walk to Bhagsu, twenty minutes downhill, for the waterfall above the village and the cafes below it. Live music most evenings somewhere along that road, which is the informal centre of the town's social life.
- Stage 05
Triund Up
Leave the laptop. The trek to Triund starts after lunch and climbs about 1,100 metres over nine kilometres to a ridge at 2,875 metres, which takes three to four hours. Camp on the ridge with the Dhauladhar wall directly behind and the Kangra valley lit up below.
- Stage 06
Triund Down
Sunrise on the wall, which is why you carried a sleeping bag up a mountain, then the descent, which is faster and harder on the knees. Back down by lunch, and the afternoon is a shower and doing nothing.
- Stage 07
The Return
Last momos, which in this town means Tibetan rather than the Delhi version, and the overnight bus home. Six nights of working somewhere that makes the working day shorter and the evenings much better.
