The route we start from

These are the stages published for this trip. A stage can cover part of a day or several days; it is not a separate travel day.

1. Stage 01

   Da Nang

   Land at Da Nang, which almost nobody treats as a destination and should. My Khe beach runs for kilometres and the city sits behind it without crowding it. If it is a weekend evening, the Dragon Bridge breathes fire and water at nine, which is exactly as ridiculous as it sounds.

2. Stage 02

   Ba Na Hills

   Up to Ba Na Hills by cable car, one of the longest single-span rides in the world, climbing out of the heat into cloud. The Golden Bridge is a walkway held up by two enormous stone hands and is unapologetically built for photographs; it works anyway. A French-themed village at the top, which is odd and fun.

3. Stage 03

   Into Hoi An

   The Marble Mountains on the way south: five limestone hills with caves, pagodas and shrines inside them, and a viewpoint reached by a lot of steps. Then Hoi An, a trading port preserved intact because the river silted up and the money left. The old town after dark runs on silk lanterns.

4. Stage 04

   Hoi An Slow

   Basket boats at Cam Thanh in the coconut palms, which is half excursion and half comedy. A tailor fitting in the morning if you want something made, delivered next day. The afternoon is riverside cafes and the old town on foot, and the evening is a paper lantern set on the river.

5. Stage 05

   The Return

   A last morning in Hoi An or on the beach, then the flight home from Da Nang. Four nights, one preserved trading port, one bridge held up by giant hands, and clothes that fit properly for once.
