The story
Eighty feet of the Chalakudy river dropping across a wide shelf of rock, with rainforest on both sides. It is the waterfall from every second Malayalam film and it earns the billing.
The path to the bottom is steep and worth it — the view from below is the one people remember. Vazhachal is five kilometres upstream and quieter.
What happens

-
A full day on the Chalakudy river, starting at Athirappilly in the morning, which is the largest waterfall in Kerala at around 80 feet high, and is regularly called the Niagara of India by people who have not seen Niagara. The view from the top is the easy one; the path down to the base takes about twenty minutes and is steep, slippery in the wet months, and completely worth it for standing in the spray. Vazhachal is five kilometres upstream and is a different thing, a broad rapid rather than a plunge, set against rainforest that holds all four South Indian hornbill species. The road between and beyond them runs through the Sholayar range and is one of the best drives in the state, with Charpa falls landing beside the road itself in season.
