The story

Varkala is the only place on this coast where cliffs meet the sea, and the whole town is arranged along the top of them.

Papanasam beach below has a freshwater spring running out of the rock, which pilgrims come to bathe in. You walk the cliff path at the end of the day, and the sun goes into the Arabian Sea with nothing in the way.

What happens

The plan as the operator runs it. Start times and pickup are confirmed for your date.

  1. Three hours timed for the end of the day, starting inland at the Janardanaswamy temple, which is around two thousand years old and is the reason the town exists; non-Hindus may visit the grounds rather than the sanctum. Down to Papanasam beach below it, where a mineral spring runs out of the cliff onto the sand and the name means destroyer of sins, which is why families come here to perform last rites at the water's edge. Then the north cliff path, which runs along the top of a red laterite bluff directly above the Arabian Sea with cafes and shops strung along the landward side. Varkala is the only place on the Kerala coast where cliffs meet the sea like this, and the sunset from the edge is what the whole town turns out for.
