The story
Al Ain Adventure sits at the base of Jebel Hafit, the mountain on the edge of Al Ain, and is built around water: whitewater channels for rafting, kayaking, inflatable 'duckies' and tubing, a wave pool, Aqua Island with its inflatable obstacles, the Oasis Pool with jacuzzis and cabanas, and Splash Quest, a play zone for younger children. The park also sells surfing on the wave pool as a separate pass that must be booked ahead. The operator's option is a day pass with water activities, about five hours, with no transfer. The park sells several passes, from pool-only entry to a pass that adds rafting, kayaking and tubing, and the operator does not name which one this is, so your captain confirms exactly which activities your pass covers before you pay.
What it feels like: loud water and a bare brown mountain behind it. The whitewater channels are the part you hear first, then the shriek of a raft dropping into a chute. Rafting comes with a guide, a briefing and the safety kit, and after the first run the nerves turn into wanting another go. Between runs the wave pool and the Oasis Pool are where the group regroups, wet, sunburnt at the edges and arguing about who fell in. It is a very different Emirates day from the malls and the desert.
Who this suits, and why: friends groups and the family with teenagers first, because the rafting and kayaking need everyone to be over 1.2 metres and the day is built for people who want to get soaked; adventure-minded couples; and families with younger children only for the pools and Splash Quest. Al Ain is a 90-minute drive inland from downtown Abu Dhabi and no transfer is included, so the drive is worth it for a group that has a car, is staying in Al Ain, or is pairing it with Al Ain Zoo, which is also at Jebel Hafit, on a full Al Ain day. For a family on a short Abu Dhabi stay, Yas Waterworld on Yas Island is the far shorter journey.
