The story

The Yellow Boats are the bright rigid-inflatable speedboats you see bouncing along the Abu Dhabi waterfront. By the operator's own description the Corniche tour leaves the Emirates Palace Marina, runs along the Heritage Village site, follows the length of the Corniche with a pause at Fisherman's Village, and heads into open water to circle Lulu Island, the 1,050-acre man-made island off the city, with a guide talking through the skyline as you go. Both are boat only: you make your own way to the marina.

What it feels like: fast and wet at the edges. You sit in a row on the inflatable sides in a life jacket, the boat leaps off the wake, spray comes over the bow, and the towers of the Corniche go past at a pace no coach tour manages. Then the driver slows for the photographs: the Emirates Palace from the water, the Etihad Towers, the long curve of the beach. Children love it, teenagers love it more, and a lot of grandparents surprise themselves. Go in the late afternoon for the light and the cooler air.

Who this suits, and why: the family with teenagers and friends groups, because it is the loudest hour of sightseeing in the city; the school-holiday family with children who are past the toddler stage; and couples who want the skyline photographs without the dinner cruise. It is not for anyone who cannot manage a bumpy ride, for pregnant travellers, or for those with back or neck trouble; the dhow dinner cruise is the calm version of the same water.

What happens
