The story
Abu Dhabi's high viewpoint is not a tower with a ticket hall but a cafe. The Observation Deck at 300 is on the 74th floor of the Conrad hotel in the Etihad Towers, 300 metres above the city by the hotel's own page, with a view all the way round: the Corniche curving away, the Emirates Palace and its gardens directly below, the sea and the islands on one side and the city grid on the other. An hour and a half covers the view and a coffee.
What it feels like: calm. There is no queue to speak of, a lift takes you up, and you sit at a window table with the whole of Abu Dhabi laid out and a cup of something in your hand. The light is the point: late afternoon turns the Emirates Palace dome gold and the sea silver, and if you stay for dusk the Corniche lights come on in a line. It is a calm, easy stop, and the one grandparents talk about afterwards.
Who this suits, and why: active seniors and those with mobility limits, because it is a lift, a chair and a view; couples, for the afternoon-tea hour and the sunset; and the multigenerational group as the rest stop between the mosque and dinner. Friends groups and teenagers usually give it an hour and move on; for them the Yellow Boats ride below is the livelier way to see the same skyline.
