The story

Ferrari World is the theme park under the enormous red roof on Yas Island, about 15 minutes from Zayed International Airport by the park's own reckoning. The headline is Formula Rossa: a single launch to 240 km/h, 4.8 G on the way, a climb to 52 metres, and a ride you will describe to people for years. Around it are more than 40 rides and attractions by the park's count, from a family driving school and slow Italian scenery rides to the drop towers and coasters that make the teenagers go quiet in the queue.

What it feels like: cool. Almost everything is under the roof, which matters more than any ride when it is 42 degrees outside. The sound is engines and launch hisses and screaming, in a good way. The red is everywhere. You queue, you get strapped in, the countdown lights go, and then the world goes sideways. Between rides there is the slower stuff, a lot of it built for the under-1.2-metre crowd, and food courts where the coffee is Italian and the rest is what a family from Ahmedabad would expect: pizza, pasta, plenty that is vegetarian if you ask.

Who this suits, and why: the family with teenagers, first of all; this is the day the teenager chooses. The school-holiday family with younger children does fine too, because the park lists eight rides for children under 1.2 metres, several from 90 cm with an adult beside them. Friends groups make a competition of it. Couples enjoy it as a half-day if they are not coaster people. It is not the right pick for grandparents unless they are happy to sit and watch; the seated rides they can do exist, but the day is built around speed.
