What happens

1. Step 01 Meeting point

   At the marina or jetty named on your voucher, at the time on it. Your captain confirms the meeting point, and whether a hotel transfer is part of the 'private' on the operator's list, before you pay.

2. Step 02 Out to sea

   The crew take the boat out to where they choose to fish that day.

3. Step 03 Fishing

   Lines out, and the waiting and the fighting that deep-sea fishing is made of. Follow the crew's instructions on what may be kept and what goes back.

4. Step 04 Return

   Back to the marina about four hours after departure.

Know before you go

• Price basis: the operator gives one price for the four-hour charter and does not say whether it is per boat or per person, or how many guests the boat takes. Your captain confirms both with the operator before you pay.
• The sheet marks the charter 'private' but does not say whether that includes a transfer from your hotel. Ask your captain.
• Season: Visit Abu Dhabi says October to April gives the most favourable fishing conditions; summer trips still run but are hotter and less popular.
• What may be kept: sharks and rays, dugongs, sea turtles, coral fish and parrotfish may not be caught under any circumstances, and other species have minimum lengths and daily limits (Visit Abu Dhabi fishing guide). The crew decide what goes back.
• Licence: Visit Abu Dhabi says tourists on a licensed charter are typically covered by the company's commercial licence; your captain confirms the charter holds one.
• Seasickness: a small boat at anchor rocks. If you are prone to it, take your usual remedy before you board and eat a light breakfast. Not advised for pregnant travellers or anyone with back trouble.
• Bring a hat, strong sunscreen, sunglasses, a light long-sleeved layer and closed, non-slip shoes. Carry water.
• No catch is promised. Trips run to the weather; the crew can shorten or call off a trip in strong wind, and your captain tells you what the operator offers if that happens.
• Availability and the departure time are confirmed by the operator only when your captain books; a booking can be declined by the supplier for a price change, allocation or stop-sale.
