What does the balloon ride include?

The morning runs like this on our Balloon at Sunrise page:

  1. Hotel pickup before dawn, around 4 am to 4.30 am.
  2. A light breakfast at the launch site.
  3. About an hour in the air over Göreme, Love Valley and the rock-cut churches, low enough to look into the fairy chimneys.
  4. The landing ceremony, with sparkling wine and a flight certificate.
  5. Back at your hotel by about 9 am.

Flight insurance is included. What is not included: tips for the pilot and crew, and anything else not listed. On a clear morning you go up with many other balloons; Hürriyet Daily News reported in July 2026 that the region has 160 balloons run by 27 companies, and that up to 150 launch on busy days.

How often are flights cancelled for weather, and what happens then?

Often enough that you should plan for it. Balloons in Cappadocia fly under the regulation of Turkey's General Directorate of Civil Aviation (SHGM), and flights don't go up in strong wind or heavy rain. Hürriyet Daily News, reporting SHGM data in July 2026, said the region usually sees flights on about 220 days a year, and 223 days in 2025. The first half of 2026 was poor: only 90 flying days between January and June, because of heavy rain and strong winds.

Daily Sabah gave the month-by-month figures from the same data (24 Jul 2026):

February8
March13
April18
May17
June25

These are this year's first-half numbers, not a forecast.

What happens if your flight is grounded

  • On our balloon ride, if the operator cancels, you get a full refund or a seat the next morning.
  • On our Turkey Classic and Honeymoon trips, a second balloon morning is held in the schedule, and a free reschedule or refund applies if the balloon is grounded.
  • Plan at least two nights in Cappadocia, and book the balloon for your first morning, so a cancelled flight still leaves you another chance.

The call is made on the morning itself, so keep the plan flexible.

Who can fly, and who should skip the balloon?

Our balloon page sets two limits: the ride is not suitable in pregnancy, or for anyone who cannot stand unaided for an hour. You stand for the whole flight, and you need to steady yourself for landing. There is no wheelchair access to the basket.

  • Elderly parents: they can fly if they can stand for an hour without support and brace for a landing. If not, the balloons can be watched from the ground at sunrise; ask us to plan it.
  • Children: tell us their ages when you enquire. On our Turkey Classic trip, children can skip the balloon and still see the valleys and the old city on foot.
  • Health: if you have a heart, back or joint condition, check with your doctor before you book.
  • Fear of heights: if you are unsure, the ground view at sunrise is the fallback, and you can see the valleys on foot later in the day.

Pack a real jacket and closed shoes. Our balloon page notes it is cold at dawn, even in summer.

When should you plan the balloon morning on a Turkey trip?

Balloons flew in every month of the first half of 2026, but the figures above show why winter is the hardest to count on: January and February had fewer than ten flying days each, and June had 25. For Indian families, the Diwali break and the summer school holidays give you a run of days for Turkey; in winter, plan more spare mornings.

Within your trip, the best slot is your first morning in Cappadocia. If it is grounded, you still have the next one, and the days in between work well for the valleys, the Göreme Open Air Museum and the underground city.

How do you fit the balloon into a Turkey itinerary?

Our two Cappadocia trips start in Istanbul, then fly to Cappadocia, which takes a little over an hour.

Turkey Classic, 7 days: from ₹99,999

Three nights in Istanbul (Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Basilica Cistern, Topkapi Palace and a Bosphorus boat), then Cappadocia with a cave-hotel stay. The balloon is on day 5, with a second attempt built into the schedule, followed by the Göreme Open Air Museum. Day 6 is the underground city, which goes down eight levels, and the Devrent and Pasabag valleys. It suits families and parents, and scarves are provided for mosque visits.

Turkey Honeymoon, 6 days: from ₹1,34,999

Istanbul with a Bosphorus dinner cruise, then a cave suite in Göreme, sunset wine at a valley viewpoint, the balloon on day 4 with an optional private basket for the two of you, a couple's hammam, and a day for the valleys and the pottery town of Avanos. A second morning is held for the balloon here too.

Both trips include return flights from Ahmedabad, stays with daily breakfast, transfers and the listed experiences, and we handle the visa where applicable. For vegetarian or Jain meals, tell us when you enquire and your trip captain checks each meal stop. For the rest of the country, see our Turkey destination guide, and if you want a different mix of cities, read how we build customised travel plans.
