The story
The gondola is a cliché and it is also completely worth it, provided you go through the small canals rather than the Grand Canal traffic jam.
St Mark’s is gold mosaic from floor to dome — eight thousand square metres of it — and the queue outside routinely runs to two hours. Skip-the-line is the whole trick.
What happens
The plan as the operator runs it. Start times and pickup are confirmed for your date.
-
A shared gondola for five, boarding from a side canal near the Rialto rather than the Grand Canal, which is the difference between drifting through quiet water between buildings and queuing in traffic. Roughly thirty minutes through the back canals of San Polo and San Marco, under bridges low enough to duck for, past water doors and peeling brick that has been wet for six hundred years. Then across to St Mark's on foot for timed entry to the basilica, which skips the queue that wraps around the square. Inside, the whole ceiling is gold mosaic laid over eight centuries, around eight thousand square metres of it, and the Pala d'Oro behind the altar is an altarpiece of gold and enamel set with a few thousand gems. The square and the campanile are outside afterwards, and both are free to stand in for as long as you like.
