The story

Tirta Empul stands in Manukaya village near Tampaksiring, in Gianyar Regency, about 14 km northeast of Ubud, just below the Presidential Palace of Tampaksiring (indonesia.travel, checked 26 Sep 2026). The temple dates to 926 AD by local telling, and its sacred spring feeds a bathing structure, or petirtaan, where Balinese Hindus carry out melukat, a purification ritual: worshippers and visitors stand in line and move along a row of waterspouts, dipping their heads under each one in turn (two of the spouts are kept only for rites for the dead). The operator's day also stops at Ubud Palace, known locally as Puri Saren Agung, in the centre of Ubud town.

What it feels like: Tirta Empul is the heart of the day. The ritual is a living one, carried out by worshippers as well as visitors, and the line at the spouts moves at its own pace. A sarong is required before entering the temple grounds and can be rented at the entrance; if you join the bathing, wear something under it you do not mind getting wet. Ubud Palace, in the middle of town, is the day's other stop.

This suits couples and families who want one clearly spiritual, photogenic stop rather than a long list of temples, and seniors who prefer a single well-paced day over a multi-site marathon. The exact order and time spent at each site is set by the operator on the day; your captain can tell you whether the private tour, priced separately, changes the pace.

What happens

The plan as the operator runs it. Start times and pickup are confirmed for your date.

  1. Collection from your Bali hotel by shared or private vehicle, depending on the tour you choose.

  2. A stop at Ubud Palace (Puri Saren Agung), in the centre of Ubud.

  4. Back to your Bali hotel; the whole day runs about 8 hours by the operator.
